What Happens in a Vivid Vision Expander Session
By Jennifer Hudye · September 22, 2026 · 3 min read
The Expander is the stage in the Vivid Vision Method where a founder's picture of the future stops being safe and starts being real. Here is what actually happens in the room, or on the call.
It starts with what you already have
Before the session, you usually come in with a rough mind map from the Clarity stage: early answers to the big questions about your team, clients, money, and life three years out.
Most of those first answers are true but small. The Expander session exists to find out what is underneath them.
The core move: and what else
For every section, the facilitator asks the same simple question after your first answer: and what else? Then asks it again. And again.
The first answer is usually the one that feels safe and achievable from where you stand today. The second and third answers start reaching further. By the fourth, you are often saying things you did not expect to say, and those are frequently the truest parts of the whole vision.
Why you cannot do this alone as well
Left to yourself, most founders stop at the first or second answer, because your own mind has a ceiling built from your current constraints. You do not notice you have stopped reaching, because it feels like you have said everything there is to say.
A facilitator has no such ceiling. They do not know what feels impossible to you, so they keep asking past the point where you would have stopped on your own.
It covers business and life together
The session moves through the full picture: the team, the clients, the offer, the money, operations, your role, and your life. Most planning fixes the business or the person, but rarely both, and the Expander is built specifically to hold both in the same room, on the same day.
One day, or a few shorter ones
The classic format is a single focused day, in person. For founders who cannot clear a full day, or who prefer it, the same ground gets covered across two or three shorter virtual sessions instead.
What comes out of it
Not a finished document. Raw, detailed, expanded material across every section of the vision. That material then goes to the next stage, Powerfully Articulate Your Vision, where it becomes the actual three to five page written piece.
What it actually feels like
Founders often describe the session as tiring in an unusual way. Not tiring like a normal workday. Tiring like sustained, unfamiliar thinking, because you are being asked to hold a much bigger picture in your head than you normally allow yourself to consider.
It is common to say something in the session you did not know you believed until you heard yourself say it. That is usually a sign the process is working, not a sign you got carried away.
Preparing for a session
The best preparation is not more thinking beforehand. It is clearing real time and mental space: no calls scheduled right before or after, a quiet location, and a willingness to sit with a question for longer than feels comfortable before answering it.
What happens with the personal sections
The Expander covers your life with the same depth as the business. A good facilitator will push on your personal answers exactly as hard as your business ones, because a vision that expands the company but stays timid about your own life ends up lopsided, and the business tends to eat the space the personal side left empty.
Trust the process even when it feels uncomfortable
The discomfort of the Expander is not a sign something is going wrong. It is the sign the session is doing its job. Founders who push through the awkward middle stretch, where the easy answers have run out and the real ones have not arrived yet, tend to walk away with the strongest material. The temptation to wrap up early and call the first draft good enough is exactly the moment to keep going.
Hold the vision. Not the circumstances.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a Vivid Vision Expander session?
- A focused facilitated session, usually one day in person or two to three shorter virtual sessions, where a founder is guided through the Vivid Vision Method to push their three-year picture past their first, safest answers.
- Why do I need a facilitator for this?
- It is very hard to expand your own vision past your own ceiling by yourself. A trained facilitator knows what a safe, hedged answer sounds like and keeps asking until you reach the true one.
- Can I do this virtually?
- Yes. The day can be broken into two to three shorter virtual sessions if an in-person day is not practical.
- What comes out of the session?
- The raw material for your Vivid Vision: detailed answers across every section, which then get turned into polished prose in the next stage of the process.
