Pleasure Stacking: Weaving the Good Life Into a Working Week. Article by Jennifer Hudye of Vision Driven.

Founders are good at delayed gratification. It is part of why the business works. It is also why so many of them arrive at success unable to enjoy it, having spent a decade in the habit of putting life off.

Pleasure stacking is the correction. You build small, real enjoyment into the working week itself, now, layered onto things you are already doing.

Why saving it all for later fails

The plan is: grind now, enjoy life once the business is sorted. The business is never sorted, so the enjoyment keeps moving. And a decade of practicing not enjoying things makes it genuinely hard to start when the moment finally comes.

Small enjoyment now is not a leak in the plan. It is what keeps you able to run the plan for years without burning out.

How to stack

The move is to layer a small pleasure onto something already on your calendar, so it costs no extra time.

  • Meetings you could walk: take the one-on-one as a walk somewhere you like.
  • Focus work: do one morning a week from a cafe or a spot you genuinely enjoy being in.
  • The commute or the drive: pair it with music, a podcast, or a call to a friend you look forward to.
  • Meals: make one weekly dinner something you actually like cooking, not just fuel.
  • The workday edges: a real coffee ritual in the morning, a short walk at the end to mark the stop.

None of these are big. That is the point. They are frequent and reliable, not rare and grand.

Put it in the vision

The life section of your Vivid Vision should describe not just the big trips but the texture of a normal week. What does a good Tuesday feel like? If your vision only has milestones in it and no daily pleasure, you are describing a life you will not enjoy living even if you get it.

The test

Look at last week. Name three moments you actually enjoyed. If you cannot, you are running on pure delay, and that is not sustainable for a build that takes years.

Start with one stack this week. Add another when it sticks.

Why founders are bad at this

Delayed gratification is a founder’s superpower and their trap. The same wiring that lets you reinvest every dollar and skip every weekend also quietly trains you to treat enjoyment as something that happens after, once the work is done.

The work is never done. So after keeps moving, and a decade goes by. Some founders reach a real milestone, a sale, a big year, and discover they no longer know how to switch enjoyment on. The muscle atrophied.

Small and frequent beats big and rare

Pleasure stacking is deliberately unambitious. You are not planning a sabbatical. You are making sure that in a normal working week there are five or six small moments you look forward to and actually notice.

A good coffee ritual. A walking meeting on a route you like. One weekly dinner you enjoy cooking. A drive paired with music instead of a call. These cost no extra time, because they are layered onto things already on your calendar, and they keep you able to run the long build without the joy draining out of it.

Put the texture of a good week into the life section of your Vivid Vision, not just the milestones. A vision with only big wins in it describes a life you will not enjoy living even if you get it.

A short list to steal from

If you are not sure where to start, pick one of these this week: a proper coffee ritual to open the workday, a ten-minute walk to close it, one work session from a place you genuinely like being, a weekly meal you enjoy making, a commute paired with music or a friend instead of a call, or a Friday-afternoon habit that marks the end of the week. None of them cost extra time. All of them are things you will actually notice. Add a second one only once the first has stuck for a few weeks.

Hold the vision. Not the circumstances.

Frequently asked questions

What is pleasure stacking?
Deliberately building small, real sources of enjoyment into your normal week, layered onto things you are already doing, so the good life is happening now rather than being saved for later.
Isn't that a distraction from building the business?
No. Founders who wait to enjoy life until the business is done tend to burn out or arrive at the finish line unable to switch it on. Small enjoyment now sustains the long build.
What are examples of pleasure stacking?
Taking a walking meeting somewhere you like, working a morning a week from a cafe you love, pairing your commute with music or a podcast you look forward to, or making one weekly meal something you actually enjoy cooking.
How is this different from work-life balance?
Balance splits time between work and life. Pleasure stacking layers enjoyment onto the working week itself, so the two are not separate.
